The Real Reason You Self-Sabotage
Let’s be real: self-sabotage is frustrating. You know what you want, you know what you should be doing to get there—but somehow you keep tripping yourself up. Here’s the hard truth: The main reason we self-sabotage is because our subconscious mind believes it’s keeping us safe.
Your subconscious has just one job—your safety. It wants to protect you, even if that means keeping you stuck or holding you back from what you truly desire. If your subconscious thinks that achieving your dream relationship, making more money, or stepping into the life you want isn’t “safe” (for any reason, often past experiences or unresolved wounds), it will create all sorts of creative barriers.
Where Do These Subconscious Beliefs Come From?
Let me share a real-life scenario I talked about: relationships. Maybe you deeply want a healthy, loving relationship, but your dating history looks more like a string of unhealthy, negative patterns. Why? Maybe, when you were growing up, you witnessed a painful divorce or tumultuous relationships. Somewhere along the way, your subconscious decided that it’s safer to be single than risk heartbreak or chaos. As a result, every time you get close to something good, you might unconsciously pull away or attract partners that fulfill these negative expectations.
The same thing can happen with money and business. If you grew up hearing “rich people are greedy” or if you witnessed financial instability, your subconscious might equate wealth with loss, risk, or even shame. Despite your big business goals or desire for abundance, you find yourself avoiding opportunities, procrastinating, or underselling yourself. Self-sabotage strikes again.
How Do You Stop Self-Sabotaging?
So, what’s the solution? You can’t out-willpower your subconscious mind. White-knuckling through your goals will only get you so far if deep down, there’s an unresolved fear or belief holding you back.
Here are a few powerful questions I encourage you to ask yourself (as mentioned in the podcast):
- What’s really going on within me?
- What needs am I not meeting for myself?
- What am I actually afraid of?
- Take some time to journal on these. Get honest. Sometimes the answers will come quickly; other times, you may need support from a certified hypnotherapist (like myself!) to get to the deeper roots—especially if you have trauma or major subconscious wounds.
Fear of Success: The Hidden Block
It sounds counterintuitive, but many of us are terrified of getting what we want. Fear of success is just as real (and often more powerful) than fear of failure. Do you secretly worry that if you succeed, you’ll lose friends, invite criticism, or have “more to lose”? That’s your subconscious, keeping you safe from perceived pain.
The Good News: Healing Is Possible
If you recognize yourself in these patterns, know this: self-sabotage is not a character flaw. It’s not because you’re weak or unworthy. It simply means there’s some healing and self-awareness needed. When you start nurturing your inner world and addressing those root fears, everything starts to shift. You follow through, take action, and finally create the life you truly want—without constantly tripping over old patterns.
