Why Presence Matters
If you’re anything like me, you know just how overwhelming life can get. Between constant distractions, chaotic schedules, and the ever-present hum of stress, it’s easy to lose touch with ourselves and the life unfolding in front of us. We live in a time where the art of being present is almost lost, replaced by “doing” instead of being.
But here’s the truth: presence isn’t some airy-fairy concept reserved for meditation gurus. It’s an essential skill that reconnects us with the deeper joy and meaning in everyday life. When we feel present, we experience more peace, deeper relationships, and a genuine sense of happiness.
What Gets in the Way of Presence?
I’ve noticed there are a few big culprits that keep us from being present:
- Distractions: Our devices, endless to-do lists, and the constant “ping” of notifications.
- Chaos: The busy-ness of life, especially around holidays or busy seasons.
- Stress and Past Wounds: Unresolved emotions and old wounds form an invisible shield, blocking us from fully experiencing the moment.
I like to think of it as an invisible filter we don’t even realize is there—we see life more through our chaos and stress than our true reality.
How Do We Become More Present?
Here’s the process I’ve found most helpful, both for myself and the clients I support:
1. Self-Awareness
Ask yourself three simple but profound questions:
- What are my main distractions right now?
- Where am I experiencing stress?
- Where is there chaos in my life?
Write these questions down. Revisit them during moments of quiet and stillness. The first step is shining a light on what’s unconscious, making it conscious.
2. Shift Your Focus
Once you know what’s blocking your presence, ask: What do I want to feel instead? Maybe it’s peace, joy, or simply a sense of groundedness.
Then, get curious: What brings you joy or calm? If you’re unsure, try something new—take a walk somewhere different, pick up a hobby you’ve never attempted. Stretching beyond our routines can ignite that feeling of being truly alive.
3. Create a Daily Practice
Presence isn’t a one-and-done thing; it’s a practice. Here’s what I recommend:
- Meditation: Even five minutes a day can train your mind to return to stillness, even amidst chaos and stress.
- Breathwork: When you’re in a moment of overwhelm, pause and take a deep breath. Imagine grounding right into the experience. This regrounds you, centers your energy, and brings you back to the now.
- Consistency Over Intensity: Five minutes every day is more effective than twenty minutes once a week. The key is daily, gentle effort.
Your subconscious mind loves repetition. The more you practice, the more natural presence and mindfulness will feel.
The Real Gift of Presence
Presence isn’t about shutting out chaos or pretending stress doesn’t exist. Instead, it’s about turning the volume down and choosing to participate more fully in your life. This is how we shift from simply doing life to being in life—connecting, feeling, and awakening to the beauty right where we are.
