Hi everyone, Gianna Badot here — welcome back to my blog! If you’ve ever wondered why certain situations or people set you off, ignite a wave of emotion, or leave you spiraling in stress or self-doubt, you’re not alone. I’ve been there too, and in my latest episode of the podcast, I shared my personal insights and practices around understanding what our triggers are really trying to teach us.
Today, I want to dig even deeper — right here on the blog — to help you unpack your emotional triggers, so you can transform them from sources of pain into pathways for growth and self-mastery.
Understanding Emotional Triggers: They Aren’t Here to Torture You
For years, I used to believe that my triggers were trying to ruin my day, or worse, break me down. It wasn’t until I started working as a coach, hypnotherapist, and meditation teacher that I realized something profoundly powerful: your triggers are your teachers.
Whenever you’re triggered—whether it’s an argument with your partner, a tough bill in the mail, or an offhand comment that stings—your emotional response isn’t random. As I explained in my latest episode, these reactions are invitations to shine a light on the parts of ourselves needing healing, love, and attention.
Why We Downward Spiral—and How to Stop It
It’s all too easy to react in the heat of the moment. You might feel yourself slipping into fight-or-flight, spiraling into anxiety or anger, or engaging in habits you swore you wouldn’t repeat. Believe me, I know how it feels. For so long, my default was to ask, “Why is this happening to me?” But as I shared in the episode, the more empowered question is: “What is this meant to teach me?”
Every trigger, big or small, is a chance to check in with ourselves. Are there old wounds from childhood—or even our relationship with ourselves—that are being activated? When I reflect on my own journey, many reactions were rooted in patterns from my past, especially from my relationships with parents or unresolved aspects of my inner self.
The Secret: Catch Yourself Before You Spiral
Catching yourself in the moment isn’t easy, and you certainly won’t get it right every time (neither do I). But self-awareness can be strengthened, little by little, through daily practice. The more you cultivate mindfulness—through deep breathing, meditation, or subconscious work—the more you’re able to pause, take a step back, and choose your response.
That’s why I always recommend building a consistent practice. For me and for many of my clients, guided meditations (like my Rewired Meditations, linked below!) make a huge difference. They help regulate the nervous system and train the mind to become calm and present, even in triggering situations.
Your Subconscious Is Running the Show
Here’s the truth: Most of our reactions stem from subconscious programming. If you don’t know what’s driving your behaviors, you’ll always feel out of control, constantly wondering why you do what you do. When you begin to make the unconscious conscious—through self-inquiry and consistent inner work—you empower yourself to change the script.
Ask yourself, in the heat of the moment or in stillness during a meditation, “What am I meant to learn from this?” The answer may come instantly, or it may unfold slowly over time. Both are perfectly okay.
Practical Steps to Transform Your Triggers
If you’re ready to turn your triggers into teachers, here’s how to get started:
- Cultivate a Daily Practice: Even ten minutes of guided meditation can help you become more mindful and interrupt the trigger spiral.
- Ask Empowering Questions: Whenever you feel triggered, pause and ask yourself, “What is this meant to teach me?” Stay open to the wisdom that emerges, whether it comes as a feeling, an insight, or even silence.
- Be Compassionate with Yourself: This journey isn’t about being perfect. It’s about progress and transformation. Every step you take towards self-awareness is worth celebrating.
- Dig Deeper: Often, triggers are rooted in old wounds or unmet needs. Be curious about your reactions—what in your past or your daily life is calling out for healing or attention?
You Have The Power to Choose Your Response
Remember, every single day is an opportunity to learn from your triggers, to transcend old patterns, and to consciously choose who you want to be. Whether you’re just starting out on this path or you’ve been on the self-development journey for years, know that you can always change, evolve, and grow—beginning right now.
