Why Is Relaxation So Hard?
Growing up, many of us were subconsciously programmed to believe that our worth is tied to hustle, achievement, and constant doing. Maybe you learned from your parents, caregivers, or the world around you that rest equals laziness, and that “success” requires relentless effort.
But what most of us don’t realize is that this programming runs deep. We keep ourselves in go, go, go mode as a way to feel safe, as a way to prove our value—sometimes even as a way to avoid uncomfortable emotions. The more we stay busy, the less time we have to face the inner feelings lurking below the surface.
Your Subconscious Rules the Game
It’s not just about what you choose to do each day; it’s about the subconscious stories you’ve been carrying. Most likely, you’ve learned:
- Hustle means safety and worthiness.
- Rest feels risky (or just plain lazy).
- Keeping busy helps you avoid pain or unpleasant feelings.
Even if you tell yourself consciously that rest is important, your subconscious may still sabotage you, pushing you to keep moving and proving yourself. Sound familiar?
High Performers Need Relaxation Too
I work with all kinds of high performers—entrepreneurs, corporate execs, parents, healing warriors. Across the board, one thing remains true: The more you learn to relax intentionally, the more successful, present, and fulfilled you become. Busy-ness is a false protector. It will burn you out and prevent you from growing.
When you choose real relaxation (not numbing out with Netflix or endless scrolling), you allow yourself to recharge, heal, and actually awaken to what you need in order to thrive.
What Happens if You Don’t Address It?
Avoiding rest and stillness is like putting a lid on a pot of boiling emotions. Eventually, what you push down will rise up—often explosively—making it even harder to cope. Facing your programming and those hidden emotions now will save you years of pain down the road.
How to Start Rewiring Your Mind for Relaxation
- Get Honest: The first step to awakening is being raw and real with yourself. Why have you been avoiding stillness? What “truths” have you absorbed about rest, worthiness, and achievement?
- Reprogram Your Subconscious: You are not a robot doomed to survive on hustle alone. You can learn new patterns—but it starts with awareness.
- Choose Quality Rest: Find ways to nurture yourself: meditate, read, walk in nature without distractions, be present with family, or simply sit in silence and allow emotions to surface.
- Get Support: If slowing down feels especially difficult (especially because of childhood trauma), working with a guide or coach (like me) can be incredibly helpful. Apps like Rewired, which I often recommend, can guide you through the process step-by-step.
The Path to Becoming the Awakened Self
Don’t buy into the myth that slowing down makes you weaker or less successful. In reality, stillness is what gives you true strength, self-awareness, and clarity. As you practice genuine rest, you’ll notice perfectionism and procrastination start to fade, leaving space for presence, focus, and joy.
