Hey everyone, it’s Gianna Badot here. If you’ve ever felt weighed down by the need to do everything just right – whether that’s in your career, relationships, or even parenting – this blog post is for you. In my recent podcast episode, I explored a topic that hits incredibly close to home for me: how to heal your perfectionist wound and start choosing presence over perfection.
As a one-on-one coach, certified hypnotherapist, and meditation guide, I’ve seen firsthand how perfectionism doesn’t just rob us of joy – it quietly seeps into every area of our lives, making us anxious, stressed, and sometimes, completely burnt out. If you’re ready to break this cycle, read on for my insights and practices straight from my latest podcast.
Understanding the Perfectionist Wound
The perfectionist wound isn’t always obvious. You might think you’re simply “getting things done right” or “holding yourself to a high standard.” That’s exactly how I used to justify it, too. But under the surface, perfectionism can create a constant hum of anxiety, stress, and dissatisfaction.
This wound often has roots deep in childhood—shaped by messages we received from parents, teachers, or other influential adults. For years, I had no clue I was operating from a perfectionist mindset. It was just normal to want everything to look, feel, and be perfect.
But here’s the problem: if the pursuit of perfection is exhausting you, making you anxious, and stealing your ability to enjoy life, those high standards are actually working against you.
How Perfectionism Sneaks into Every Area of Life
Let’s get real for a moment. I’ve been a perfectionist for most of my life. I’ve dealt with chronic dissatisfaction with my body, struggled to launch my business, and missed out on opportunities because nothing ever felt “perfect enough.” Perfectionism even crept into my relationships – holding others to impossible standards, just as I held myself.
The hardest part? I didn’t recognize this for years. I just thought, “This is who I am.” But the constant striving for unattainable standards made me sick, emotionally and mentally, until I realized that perfectionism is an endless, losing game.
The perfectionist cycle looks like this: try to be perfect → fall short → feel guilty and inadequate → double down on trying to be perfect. Sound familiar?
Breaking the Cycle: Presence Over Perfection
So, how do we begin the healing process? Here’s what I’ve learned, both personally and with my clients:
1. Awareness is Everything
The first step is admitting that perfectionism is a part of how you operate. Bring compassion to this realization. Remember, it likely came from well-intentioned adults who passed down what they knew.
2. Recognize the Impact
Perfectionism doesn’t just affect you – it impacts your relationships, your children, and can become a generational cycle. Do you want to pass this down, or will the cycle stop with you?
3. Subconscious Rewiring
Breaking free isn’t about willpower; it’s about rewiring old patterns in your subconscious mind. This is where deep meditation and hypnotherapy come in. (If you want support, check out my Rewired App with over 50 guided tracks designed for deep transformation.)
4. Practice Presence Daily
Presence is the antidote to perfectionism. It’s about being all-in with whatever is happening right now – not thinking about the future or ruminating on the past. One of my favorite practices? Just step outside and take a deep breath. Yes, it’s that simple—and incredibly powerful.
Set reminders to pause and breathe throughout your day. When you reconnect with your body and the present moment, you shift out of the ego’s perfectionistic drive and let your soul take the lead.
5. Lead with Your Soul, Not Your Ego
Your soul will never demand perfection; it values authenticity and truth above all else. When you make decisions from this intuitive, grounded place, your life not only looks better but feels better.
The Ripple Effect of Healing
When you commit to healing your perfectionist wound, you aren’t just transforming your own life. You’re healing generations before and after you. As a mom, this became my biggest motivation—I refuse to pass this wound to my daughter.
Since doing this work, my body image has healed, my relationships have become more loving and real, and I’ve found freedom and momentum in my business. I want this for you, too.
Your Invitation
Are you ready to live a life that feels as good as it looks? If you’re serious about breaking the perfectionist cycle, start by cultivating presence—one breath, one moment, one day at a time.
